Art history en suite

Five hotels that will let you immerse yourself in the arts without turning off holiday mode.

Sometimes all we want is a full-on vacation. No tourist traps, no queues, no endless dilemmas between resting and getting through the “must see” list. Rest assured, it’s still possible to fit some culture in with a selection of art-inclusive hotels that we present you.

Majestic Hotel & Spa, Barcelona. A long-time favourite of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro, the hotel also hosted the New Art fair back in the 90s. The family behind the project, Soldevila-Casals, keeps collecting and exhibiting some pieces in the hotel’s public zones. Drop by for an informal meeting with works by such modern Spanish artists as Joan Miro, Eduardo Chillida, Antonio Saura and many others.

Capri Palace Hotel & Spa, Anacapri. Art is everywhere in this hotel. Reception is fitted with an original Giorgio de Chirico, while the entrance parades a 36-meter bas-relief “Sea shores” by Arnoldo Pomodoro, which could make any modern art museum jealous. The hotel also serves as a workshop, inviting artists to relax and work there, selecting best of their works to expand the collection.

Minos Beach Hotel, Crete. This island gem is one of the most original hotels of the area, and deservedly so. Works by modern Greek artists are exhibited outdoors on the hotel grounds, providing countless photo opportunities to liven up your Instagram account.

The Dolder Grand, Zurich. This hotel’s art collection has over 130 pieces by Dali, Henry Moore, Camille Pissarro and others. Most of them are placed in hotel’s public areas, so even without living there you can do a little tour. The Picasso is hung by the entrance to the restaurant (laconically named The Restaurant), while Pissarro’s four works are inside of it.

Cavalieri Hotel, Rome. Not many people know that the hotel’s rather modern building, built in the 50s, stores an impressive art collection. It’s one of the biggest private art collections that consists of over 1000 works. Among them are pieces by Italian masters of XVI-XVIII century, modern art, art-deco vases and lamps, ballet costumes of Rudolph Nureyev, spectacular tapestries and marble sculptures.
