Your Sunday Inspiration this week comes from Dutch contemporary artist Nick Verstand. His light and sound installations create an environment so hypnotic that they force the viewers to consider the fundamental nature of human behaviour, perception, and emotion.

Verstand has collaborated with some phenomenal artists, such as Fatima Yamaha, and his installation ‘Aura’ was selected by Dezeen, alongside works by Ai Weiwei and Anish Kapoor, as one of the top installations of 2017. He emphasizes the break down of social boundaries in his artistic practice, a desire which has culminated in a series of collaborative works that blur the line between artist and audience.

Verstand’s fascination with the human condition has led him to explore how human energy can be manipulated to create art. ‘Aura’ used emotional data from viewers to determine the impact of music on their emotions. The emotional data was transformed into a striking lights show and displayed for an audience, informing them of the intimate and emotional journey of those providing the data.
Verstand has exhibited works and performed live around the world. His background as a DJ provides him with a unique insight into the impact music can have on the souls of those experiencing it and contributes greatly to his artistic practice.
