Digital Twin, ART Records and ID.art: tools built on .ART domains to identify, document and protect artworks, based on the Object ID standard.

.ART is more than a domain. Built on stable, reliable and secure internet infrastructure, .ART provides digital tools to identify, document and protect works of art.

Digital records of artworks

Digital Twin

Digital Twin is a technology tool from .ART that complies with international protocols. It is based on the Domain Name System (DNS) and uses Object ID, the art object identification standard developed by the J. Paul Getty Trust and adopted by UNESCO, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and law enforcement agencies such as Scotland Yard and Interpol. Information about the artwork and its owner is presented through a specially added website description.

What Digital Twin does

  • A “time capsule” for high-resolution digital copies of artworks;
  • A digital container for any information related to an artwork;
  • A platform for gathering public support to protect world cultural heritage;
  • Digital proof of an artwork’s authenticity and physical existence.

A digital avatar of the artwork

Owners can store a digital avatar of their work in Digital Twin, linking the physical and virtual worlds. Unlike an ordinary high-resolution scan, the data is kept securely under a dedicated web address. Theft, natural disasters or other destructive forces can make a precious work disappear overnight, and digitisation is an important way to protect cultural heritage. Ephemeral art forms such as street performances, improvisations and pop-ups can be preserved this way too.

Digital proof of authenticity

These domains do not identify an organisation or a person; each is linked to one unique artwork. Every work is formally registered, and its owner — an institution or a private person — is recorded in the website description, much like an offline certificate of authenticity. The record includes the artist’s name, title, medium, dimensions, chain of custody and other data.

Provenance and tracking

Digital Twin can establish and store an artwork’s ownership and custody history worldwide: the fuller the record, the more valuable the work. Works with a Digital Twin are more visible and easier to track online, so owners can see when, where and how their work is shown while protecting their rights.

All information in one place

  • Store text, images, video, 3D printing files, exhibition tour schedules and more in one place;
  • The owner decides which information is public;
  • Selectively offer further content, such as academic references and audio and video guides;
  • Add third-party services: image printing, souvenirs, museum shops, limited editions and more.

ART Records

ART Records is a new standard for identifying art objects using stable, reliable and secure internet infrastructure. It is also based on Object ID, the universal art object identification standard developed by the J. Paul Getty Trust and adopted by UNESCO, ICOM and law enforcement agencies including the FBI, Scotland Yard and Interpol.

Information about artworks on the internet is scattered and hard to find or track. ART Records brings all information about an artwork together at a single web address, provides evidence of provenance, and makes it possible to store, share and sell information about the work.

  1. Provenance: establish and store an artwork’s chain of ownership, even as it moves around the world. This is built into the ART Records online registration process.
  2. Online tracking: registered works are easier to see and track online, so you control when, where and how your work is shown while protecting your rights.
  3. Information in one place: all kinds of records stored together, with access controlled by the owner; academic material, articles, catalogues and guides can be made public or offered for a fee, and third-party services such as high-quality prints, souvenirs and museum shops can be added.

The first work registered as an ART Record is YUGEN.ART.

ID.art

ID.art is a platform launched by the .ART Registry on World Art Day for artists and creators to organise, authenticate and present their artworks and collectibles:

  • A portfolio website for each artist and a dedicated page for each work;
  • One dashboard to manage works, related content and social media links;
  • Verifiable certificates of authenticity, linked directly to the work’s page on ID.art, where provenance information is stored and shared;
  • Creation of .ART Digital Twins.
